Humane Education

Our Humane Education program is available to teachers and youth groups in Flagler County free of charge. Each school program includes follow up handouts such as coloring pages, puzzles, quizzes, etc. Programs can be customized to meet the needs of various ages, class size or group needs. The goal of our education programs is to develop empathy by instilling respect and responsibility for animals and their environment. Some of the programs available are:

KIND Kids Service Club – Ages 9 to 11
The Flagler Humane Society KIND Kids Service Club will resume meetings on Saturday, September 18, at 10:30 am for kids who are interested in helping the animals of Flagler Humane Society through Humane Education and service projects. The club will meet monthly and will include educational/environmental presentations, service projects and field trips.  Club members will also be given the opportunity to help out at Flagler Humane Society special events. The Flagler Humane KIND Kids Service Club is open for kids 9-11 who want to volunteer at the FHS but are too young for hands on service.   Membership space is limited so you must call to reserve your spot as a member.

Sharing Sam
This is an interactive flannel board story about “Sam” the lonely dog. The story introduces children to basic pet needs. Participation in this program helps teach children about pet owner responsibility, sharing and respect for others.

Bite Free
This program teaches children and adults how to be safe around strange animals and their own pets as well. An entertaining and informative film is followed by classroom demonstrations and discussion. Where allowed, one of our pet therapy dogs (therapy dog certified) comes along to get pets and to help with the follow up demonstration.

Tails of Kindness
“Granny Kind” reads or tells stories and poems about animals and nature. Sometimes she is assisted by “Purl”, “Wagger”, or other puppets as she tells stories about animals, humans and their relationships to one another.

Purl & Wagger
This is a puppet show depicting a story of a dog and cat who find themselves abandoned at an animal shelter. Their antics aimed at attracting the attention of potential adopters are comical, but bring home the point of the pet overpopulation problem.

Do Dreams Come True
This is an interactive flannel board story about a mother dog and her puppies who are taken to an animal shelter. Follow up discussion focuses on respect and responsibility. Children will demonstrate their writing skills and creativity by making up their own endings to the mother dog’s dream.

Boomer’s Second Chance
This is a puppet show with a sad beginning and a happy ending. “Boomer” starts his life as a neglected and very unhappy dog chained outside. But, he is rescued, and through love and kindness finds life with a forever family to be everything every dog deserves.

Various other programs are available or can be developed to meet specific subject and age needs. Shelter tours are also available for small groups. For more information or to schedule a program, please call Yvonne Presley AKA “Granny Kind” at 445-1814 during shelter business hours, or send an email.
